Suitability

Who should do this course

those who undertake work to produce products from glass and related materials in the glass processing sector. This covers the handling of products throughout the process. Units in this qualification cover cutting, shaping, assembling and finishing the products, including decoration.

This qualification should be taken by those who are experienced glass processors, capable of dealing with a wide range of issues, including the identification and rectification of technical problems and working with a wide range of glass types.Candidates may be required to show the skills and knowledge to assess products or work procedures and identify possible improvements, and may also be responsible for setting up glass processing machinery.

Level

What this level is the equivalent of

An NVQ Level 3 is equivalent to two A Levels.

By their nature, NVQ qualifications are very different to A-Levels as they display your ability to specific work environments and job roles, whereas A-Levels display a more general academic achievement.

Duration

How long the NVQ takes to complete

The duration is always lead by the candidate undertaking the qualification. NVQs usually take about 10 weeks.

What completing this NVQ can lead to

Once you have achieved your level 3 certificate, you may also wish to further your knowledge and take another NVQ at a higher level. Popular NVQs to progress to include the Leadership Qualifications like the L3 Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision

GQA Gold Skilled Worker CSCS Q-Card

This GQA gold tradesman card is available subject to the achievement of the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Glass Processing.

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) agreed that from January 2015 industry, including trade associations, contractors, clients and government should specify and promote card schemes carrying the CSCS logo, with no equivalents accepted.

 

GQA’s Q-Card is a partner scheme for CSCS, having sole responsibility for the Glazing/Fenestration and Glass related industries and GQA.

Units

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Glass Processing

To complete this qualification a minimum of 37 credits must be achieved, 20 from the mandatory units, a minimum of 10 credits from Group B and a minimum of 7 credits from optional Group C.

Mandatory units - Group A

All need to be complete:

  • Promote and maintain Health and Safety in a glass or glass related working environment (4)
  • Improve the work of the organisation through the use of resources, communication, and working relationships in a glass or glass related working environment (5)
  • Identify and rectify technical problems in a glass or glass related working environment (5)
  • Prepare and operate machinery/tools in glass processing (6)

Optional units - Group B

10 credits required:

  • Develop new work procedures in a glass or glass related working environment (5)
  • Set up equipment for use in glass processing (6)
  • Monitor and control operations in a glass or glass related working environment (5)
  • Assess the quality of materials and components in a glass or glass related working environment (4)

Optional units - Group C

7 credits required:

  • Shape products and materials in glass processing (2)
  • Prepare and assemble products and materials in glass processing (5)
  • Process glass products by removing materials (5)
  • Decorate glass products by applying additional material (5)
  • Toughened glass production (7)
  • Glass edge sealing (2)
  • Glass cutting in a range of glass types (8)
  • UV glass bonding (5)
  • In situ glass surface restoration (7)

Additional unit

  • Use access equipment to work at heights (4)

Initial assessment

Before you start work on your qualification you will meet with your assessor to discuss what you need to do to complete your qualification. This can include:

  • checking you are taking the right qualification level
  • checking you have chosen suitable units
  • identifying any training or learning you will need to help you gain your qualification
  • agreeing an assessment plan
  • signing a learning contract

Skill scan

As part of this meeting, you will discuss the skills and knowledge you may already have, and decide how this can be used towards your qualification. This process is sometimes called a skill scan.

Assessment plan

Once you have chosen your units you will make and agree an assessment plan with your assessor. This will show:

  • the units the plan covers
  • when you will be assessed
  • where the assessment will take place
  • what you will be doing
  • what evidence you will produce
  • who will assess you

The plan should also indicate the methods of assessment to be used to collect your evidence. Evidence can include:

  • direct observation in the workplace by a qualified assessor
  • witness testimony of work carried out by you in the workplace written by an expert witness
  • questioning – this could be verbal, written or computer based
  • other evidence which can include photographs or personal accounts
