What this level is the equivalent of

An NVQ Level 2 is equivalent of having five A* - C grade GCSEs.

By their nature, NVQ qualifications are very different to GCSEs as they display your ability to specific work environments and job roles, whereas GCSEs display a more general academic achievement.

Units

What's in Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations

The minimum credit value of the qualification is 36 credits, whichever pathway is selected. Candidates should achieve all 3 mandatory units and at least 26 credits from the chosen pathway

Mandatory units

All units must be achieved:

    • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace (2)
    • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace (3)
    • Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace (5)

Pathway 1: Site Carpentry

You must achieve a minimum of 3 optional units:

    • Installing first fixing components in the workplace
    • Installing second fixing components in the workplace
    • Erecting structural carcassing components in the workplace
    • Maintaining non-structural carpentry work in the workplace
    • Installing fire resisting timber door assemblies and doorsets in the workplace
    • Setting up and using transportable cutting and shaping machines in the workplace

Pathway 2: Shop Fitting Site Work

You must achieve a minimum of 3 optional units:

    • Installing shop fitting frames and finishings in the workplace (26)
    • Installing shop fitting fitments in the workplace (13)
    • Installing shopfronts and finishings in the workplace (15)
    • Installing fire resisting timber door assemblies and door sets in the workplace (69)
    • Setting up and using transportable cutting and shaping machines in the workplace (26)

Pathway 3: Shop Fitting Bench Work

All mandatory units must be achieved:

    • Marking out from setting out details for routine shop fitting products in the workplace
    • Manufacturing routine shop fitting products in the workplace

You must achieve a minimum of 1 optional unit:

    • Producing setting out details for routine shop fitting products in the workplace (12)
    • Setting up and using transportable cutting and shaping machines in the workplace (19)

Pathway 4: Pre-Assembled Roof Structure Installer

All units must be achieved:

    • Erecting timber roof structures in the workplace (23)
    • Slinging and hand signalling the movement of suspended loads in the workplace (10)
    • Erecting roof structure carcassing components in the workplace (26)

Initial assessment

Before you start work on your qualification you will meet with your assessor to discuss what you need to do to complete your qualification. This can include:

  • checking you are taking the right qualification level
  • checking you have chosen suitable units
  • identifying any training or learning you will need to help you gain your qualification
  • agreeing an assessment plan
  • signing a learning contract

Skill scan

As part of this meeting, you will discuss the skills and knowledge you may already have, and decide how this can be used towards your qualification. This process is sometimes called a skill scan.

Assessment plan

Once you have chosen your units you will make and agree an assessment plan with your assessor. This will show:

  • the units the plan covers
  • when you will be assessed
  • where the assessment will take place
  • what you will be doing
  • what evidence you will produce
  • who will assess you

The plan should also indicate the methods of assessment to be used to collect your evidence. Evidence can include:

  • direct observation in the workplace by a qualified assessor
  • witness testimony of work carried out by you in the workplace written by an expert witness
  • questioning – this could be verbal, written or computer based
  • other evidence which can include photographs or personal accounts
