Which one do your people actually need?

Start with the job, not the seniority

IOSH wrote these for three different roles. Somebody senior who does not manage anyone is often better served by Working Safely than by Managing Safely, and a young supervisor with six people under them needs Managing Safely whatever their grade.

If it is the whole workforce, it is Working Safely

One day, any sector, and it can be run at your own premises for a group, which is usually easier than sending people out in ones and twos.

If they are responsible for other people, it is Managing Safely

Three days, and the one most employers mean when they say their supervisors need health and safety training. We run scheduled dates through the year as well as onsite.

If it is the board, it is Leading Safely

About five hours, no exam, and short by design because the diary is the obstacle. It is about the decisions taken above the manager.

Where IOSH fits

IOSH, CITB and NEBOSH are not competing with each other

IOSH courses are recognised across every sector, which is exactly why a construction site gate is not looking for one. Sites ask for CITB Site Safety Plus: Health and Safety Awareness for an operative, SSSTS for a supervisor, SMSTS for a manager. If your people work on sites, they will need both in practice.

NEBOSH is the other direction. IOSH Managing Safely is a course for a manager who has safety as part of the job; the NEBOSH General Certificate is a qualification for somebody whose job is health and safety. The two are often confused when an employer is writing a job advert.

Common questions about IOSH training

IOSH state that a Managing Safely certificate does not expire, and they recommend the one day Managing Safely Refresher to stay current. Many employers refresh awareness training every three years as their own policy rather than because IOSH ask for it.

Yes. IOSH courses can only be delivered by approved providers and every genuine IOSH certificate can be verified online with IOSH.

Yes, anywhere in the UK, and for a group it is usually cheaper and easier than sending people out. Tell us the course, how many people and where, and we will come back the same working day.

For getting through a site gate it is CITB. IOSH is recognised but it is not the certificate a site is checking for. In practice construction people often hold both, and we run both.

No. Managing Safely is a three day course for a manager. The NEBOSH General Certificate is a qualification for somebody whose job is health and safety, and takes considerably longer. Tell us what the role involves and we will say which one fits.
