About this course

The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is the one day workplace first aid qualification. It is the standard answer for offices, shops, hospitality, education and service environments where a first aid needs assessment points at emergency cover rather than the full three day award.

It concentrates on the incidents that have to be dealt with in the first few minutes: an unresponsive casualty, CPR, the recovery position, choking, serious external bleeding, shock, seizures, and minor injuries and burns. It does not attempt the wider ground the three day First Aid at Work award covers, and it is not meant to.

That focus is its strength. One day, mostly practical, and everybody in the room leaves able to start CPR and control a bleed rather than able to describe them.

We run it at our centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, and onsite at employers' premises nationwide. There are versions of this award with catastrophic bleeding, forestry and security units added, and we can tell you which one your risk assessment is pointing at.

  • The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider, consent and infection control
  • Assessing an incident: the scene survey, the primary survey, and summoning assistance
  • When to administer CPR, and demonstrating adult CPR on a manikin
  • When and how to place a casualty in the recovery position, and monitoring them there
  • First aid for a casualty experiencing a seizure
  • Choking, mild and severe
  • Identifying the severity of external bleeding and controlling it
  • Recognising and treating shock
  • Minor injuries, and minor burns and scalds

How completing this course helps you

  • QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, valid for three years
  • The qualification most lower hazard first aid needs assessments call for
  • Staff who can act in the first few minutes rather than wait for the ambulance
  • Support for your duties under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981

Who should attend?

Employees nominated as emergency first aiders, particularly in lower hazard workplaces such as offices, retail, hospitality, education and service environments. It also suits small businesses needing practical first aid cover, and managers or responsible persons who want a formal workplace qualification.

Entry requirements. None. You need to be physically able to carry out practical first aid on the floor, including CPR on a manikin, and to have enough English to follow the training and the written assessment.

Emergency First Aid at Work FAQs

It is the one day workplace first aid qualification covering the emergencies that have to be handled immediately: an unresponsive casualty, CPR, the recovery position, choking, serious bleeding, shock, seizures and minor injuries. It is the qualification most lower hazard workplaces arrive at through a first aid needs assessment.

That depends on your first aid needs assessment rather than on a rule. The HSE splits workplaces into lower and higher hazard, and factors in headcount, shift patterns, lone working and distance from help. Lower hazard usually lands on EFAW. If several of those factors point the other way, look at the three day First Aid at Work award.

Three years. Unlike First Aid at Work there is no shorter requalification route: you retake the one day course. HSE guidance recommends an annual refresher in between, which is a separate half day.

Practical observation through the day, plus a fifteen question multiple choice paper with a pass mark of eleven correct answers and thirty minutes allowed.

No. It assumes nothing and it suits people taking on first aid responsibility for the first time.

Yes. The same one day award is available with catastrophic bleeding control, with a forestry unit, and in a version developed to support the SIA requirement for security officers. Tell us what the work involves and we will point you at the right one.

Three years. The HSE also recommends an annual refresher in between, which is a half day and keeps skills and confidence current rather than letting them fade for three years at a time.

Yes, anywhere in the UK. For six or more people it is normally cheaper per head than sending everybody to a centre, and nobody loses a day travelling. We work around your shift patterns.
