About this course
The NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK), usually just called the NEBOSH Construction Certificate, is the sector qualification for people managing health and safety on site. It covers the same management principles as the General Certificate but sets them in construction, where the risks move as the project does.
Construction accounts for a disproportionate share of fatal and serious injuries in British workplaces, and it is regulated accordingly. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 sit on top of the general framework, giving clients, principal designers, principal contractors and contractors duties that have to be understood rather than delegated.
The content follows the site: excavation, demolition, plant and vehicles, working at height, work equipment, electricity, fire, chemical and biological agents, musculoskeletal health and load handling, and the physical and psychological health of the people doing it. Then it covers managing change, because a construction site is never the same twice and controls that were right in week three are wrong in week nine.
Assessment is a single unit. CN1 is an open book assessment based on a realistic workplace scenario, followed by a closing interview about your submission.

Who should attend?
Construction site managers responsible for day to day health and safety, site supervisors and foremen, construction workers who have taken on formal health and safety responsibility, health and safety advisors moving into or expanding their work in construction, and contractors or clients who need to understand their CDM duties properly.
Entry requirements. None. No previous health and safety qualifications are required. A reasonable standard of written English is needed because the assessment requires written responses.

Construction or General
Construction Certificate or General Certificate?
If everything you are responsible for is a construction site, the Construction Certificate is the better fit. It teaches the same management thinking against the hazards you actually meet, and it covers CDM 2015 properly rather than in passing.
If your responsibilities are wider than construction, or you want the qualification that opens the most doors across every sector, the National General Certificate is the one most job adverts name. Plenty of people in construction hold it for exactly that reason.
Holding one does not stop you taking the other, and a fair number of people end up with both as their role broadens. If you are not sure which your employer means, send us the job description and we will tell you.

CN1: open book examination
An open book assessment built on a realistic construction scenario, with a set of tasks to work through. It tests application rather than recall, which is the point of the format.
Closing interview
A short interview after the assessment, confirming the work is your own and giving you the chance to discuss it. Your named advisor prepares you for it.
Support through both
Structured preparation, planned 1:1 sessions with your advisor, and the eLearning portal for revision between taught sessions.

NEBOSH Construction Certificate FAQs
Its full name is NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK). It is a certificate level qualification for people managing health and safety on construction sites, covering CDM 2015, the site hazards from excavation to working at height, and how to manage risk on a project that changes as it goes.
No. They are at the same level and share the same management thinking, but the Construction Certificate sets it all in construction and covers CDM 2015 in depth. The General Certificate is broader and is the one named in most health and safety job adverts across all sectors.
A single unit, CN1, which is an open book assessment based on a realistic construction scenario, followed by a closing interview to confirm the work is yours and discuss your submission.
There is no separate practical risk assessment unit on this qualification, so unlike the General Certificate you do not need workplace access for a second submission. The open book assessment is scenario based.
You resit CN1 at £290 plus VAT. Course dates include registration for the assessment, so a resit is the only additional cost.
No, and the two get confused constantly. SMSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus course, five days, aimed at site managers and valid five years. The NEBOSH Construction Certificate is a qualification with no expiry that goes considerably deeper into why rather than what. Many site managers end up holding both, because principal contractors ask for SMSTS and employers value the NEBOSH.

Associate membership of IIRSM (AIIRSM). For IOSH membership routes, the National General Certificate is the qualification that supports Tech IOSH.
