Nebosh General

Studied for me Nebosh General in Feb 26 with Alan Starr. Very pleased with all the support from both Alan and Matt, very happy to have passed. I feel without the support this enabled me to get my Nebosh. The course was full of examples and scenarios, which gave a better insight of expectations and real life situations. Thanks so much Academe, I will be enrolling a few members of my management team to complete IOSH in the near future.

NVQ Level 2 vs Level 3 in Construction – Which One Do You Need?

If you are looking to get qualified in construction through an NVQ, one of the first decisions you face is which level to go for. Level 2 and Level 3 are the most common starting points for trade and site-based workers, but they are not interchangeable and choosing the wrong one can mean starting over.

What Does NVQ Level 2 Cover?

An NVQ Level 2 is broadly equivalent to GCSE level and is designed to demonstrate competence in carrying out skilled work under supervision. In construction, Level 2 NVQs cover a wide range of trades including trowel occupations, wood occupations, plastering, painting and decorating, glazing and fenestration. It is the right level for workers who are developing their skills and carrying out tasks as part of a wider team, rather than leading or supervising others.

For most trade roles, a Level 2 NVQ is the qualification that leads to a Blue CSCS card, the Skilled Worker card that demonstrates occupational competence in a specific trade.

What Does NVQ Level 3 Cover?

An NVQ Level 3 sits at A-level equivalent and reflects a higher degree of skill, responsibility and technical knowledge. In construction, Level 3 NVQs are appropriate for experienced tradespeople who carry out more complex work, exercise greater autonomy or are beginning to take on supervisory responsibilities.

A Level 3 NVQ in many construction trades is the qualification pathway to a Gold CSCS card, which demonstrates advanced craft competence and is required for certain roles and sites.

How Do You Know Which Level Is Right for You?

The starting point is your job role and the complexity of the work you carry out day to day. If you are a skilled tradesperson working independently on demanding tasks, Level 3 is likely the appropriate route. If you are earlier in your career or working within a team on standard trade activities, Level 2 is the natural starting point.

Your assessor will also play a role in determining the right level. NVQs are assessed against occupational standards, and the evidence you can provide needs to match the level you are working towards. Attempting a Level 3 without sufficient experience to evidence it will create problems during assessment.

It is also worth thinking about where you want to go. If a Gold CSCS card or a supervisory role is the end goal, building towards a Level 3 from the start makes more sense than completing a Level 2 and then starting again.

Acadame delivers construction NVQs across multiple trades and levels, with experienced assessors and a flexible ePortfolio process that fits around full-time site work. If you are ready to get started or want to discuss which level is right for your situation, get in touch with the team today.
