About this course
The NPORS N601 Agricultural Tractor category covers the tractor and the way it is actually used: driving it, hitching and unhitching implements, working the three point linkage and the power take off, and towing loaded trailers. It applies to farms, country estates, grounds maintenance and landscaping teams, local authority and highways work, forestry and equestrian yards, and to construction and civils sites where a tractor and trailer is used to cart material.
The dangerous parts of tractor work are well known and repeat year after year. Hitching, where people are crushed between the tractor and the implement, or by a machine that moves when it should not. The power take off, where an unguarded or worn shaft catches loose clothing. Overturning on slopes, in gateways, on soft verges and around ditches, made worse by a front loader or a mounted implement changing the centre of gravity. And transport: a loaded trailer has far more mass than the tractor pulling it, braking distances stretch dramatically, and road runs mix a slow wide vehicle with traffic that is not expecting it.
Three days works through the machine and the job together. Pre use and daily checks, guards, lights and tyres. Controls, the linkage, the PTO and its speed settings, and hydraulics and attachments. The Safe Stop routine of handbrake on, controls in neutral, engine off and key out before anybody goes near a linkage or a shaft, which the Farm Safety Partnership promotes for exactly this reason. Manoeuvring and reversing with a trailer, gradients and cross slopes, yards and gateways, and the presence of other people, visitors, children and livestock in a way that a fenced construction site never has to deal with.

Who should attend?
Farms and agricultural contractors, country estates and land management teams, grounds maintenance, landscaping and sports turf, forestry and equestrian yards, local authority and highways teams, golf courses, and construction and civils sites using a tractor and trailer to cart material. Also seasonal and casual staff, and new entrants to farm and estate work, who are often put on a tractor with no formal training at all. If the machine is an all terrain vehicle rather than a tractor, the N608 categories cover those.
Entry requirements. You should be at least eighteen, fit enough to climb on and off a tractor, handle hitches and implements and work outdoors, and able to follow spoken and written English well enough for the theory test, though we can arrange an interpreter or a reader on request. NPORS set no licence requirement for the category itself, which is about operating the machine; driving a tractor on a public road is a separate matter governed by licence entitlement and age rules, and we will flag it where your work involves road runs. For the version of the card that carries the CSCS logo you need a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass at Operatives level taken within the last two years, which we book for you. What you will cover
Classroom on the machine, the Safe Stop routine, the PTO and the duties, then the rest of the time on the tractor hitching, manoeuvring with a trailer, working gradients and running attachments, with theory and practical testing at the end.
The tractor, the implement and the duties
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and PUWER 1998 as they apply to tractor and implement work
- The operator handbook, tractor and trailer weights, towing limits and implement compatibility
- Major components: transmission, brakes, hydraulics, three point linkage, power take off, ROPS and cab, lights and controls
- The Safe Stop routine and when it applies: handbrake on, controls in neutral, engine off, key out
- Power take off guarding, shaft condition, speed settings and entanglement
- Hitching and unhitching: crush points, stands and props, and securing an implement before working on it
- Stability: gradients, cross slopes, soft ground, ditches, gateways and the effect of loaders and mounted implements
- Towing and transport: trailer braking, load security, manoeuvring, road runs, and people, visitors, children and livestock around the machine
On the tractor
- Pre use and daily checks of the tractor, fluids, tyres, brakes, lights, guards and PTO shaft, and reporting a defect
- Mounting and dismounting safely, starting, moving off and applying the Safe Stop routine
- Hitching and unhitching a trailer and a mounted implement safely
- Operating the three point linkage and hydraulics, and running a PTO driven attachment at the correct speed

Method of assessment
How the N601 agricultural tractor test works
NPORS assess the category by theory test and practical test. Training and assessment run together, and where you tell us at enquiry what implements you use, those can be included in the training and noted on the assessment.
1. Enquiry and group
Tell us how many people, where, what tractor you run and what implements go on it. Three sit the novice course with one instructor and one machine, four can sit the experienced worker test on this category. We quote per group.
2. Pre course check
We work out who is a genuine novice, who is an experienced worker and who is due a refresher, establish whether you need the CSCS logo version of the card or the traditional NPORS card, check the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test where it applies, and take the details NPORS need.
3. Training
Classroom on the machine, Safe Stop, the PTO and the duties, then the rest of the time on the tractor. On your own farm, estate or site we use your gradients, gateways, yards and implements.
4. Theory test
The NPORS theory test, open questions and multiple choice, covering legislation, machine components, Safe Stop, PTO guarding and speeds, hitching, stability and towing.
5. Practical test
You carry out pre use checks, hitch and unhitch, manoeuvre and reverse with a trailer, work a gradient and run a PTO driven attachment, assessed against the NPORS test specification.
6. Registration and card
We register the pass with NPORS and apply for your card. With a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test it carries the CSCS logo, as a Red Trained Operator card or a Blue Competent Operator card if you hold the relevant NVQ. For farm and estate work a traditional NPORS card is often the better fit.
After the course
Farms and estates are not fenced sites
A construction site keeps the public out, controls who walks where and has a plan for plant and pedestrians. A farm or an estate has visitors, contractors, deliveries, family, dog walkers on a right of way and sometimes livestock, all sharing the same yard and the same track as the tractor. That changes how a driver has to think about reversing, about leaving a machine standing and about who might be behind an implement. The Safe Stop routine matters more here than anywhere, because it is what protects the person who walks up behind the tractor while you are looking the other way.
It is also worth thinking about the rest of the kit at the same time. Most farm, estate and grounds teams run more than a tractor: an all terrain vehicle, a telehandler, a chipper, a chainsaw, a mower, a strimmer. Bringing an instructor out for one category at a time is the expensive way to do it. N601 Agricultural Tractor FAQs
Both, and the training is worded for both. The tractor is a farm, estate and grounds machine first, and the course deals with gradients, gateways, yards, livestock and people on a right of way as well as with site work. Where the tractor also goes onto construction and civils jobs, the CSCS logo version of the card is what a principal contractor will ask for.
NPORS publish a three day novice duration, with three candidates, one instructor and one machine. Someone already driving a tractor regularly usually takes the shorter experienced worker test, which is normally a day, and a refresher is also around a day. We confirm the length when we quote, because it follows who is on the course.
Four on this category. NPORS allow six on some plant categories but set N601 at four experienced worker tests, alongside three on the novice course and three on the refresher. It is worth knowing when you are planning to card a farm or estate team.
Yes, where you tell us about them. Trailers, loaders, toppers, spreaders and other PTO driven attachments can be built into the training, and the implements you use can be covered in the assessment and noted on the paperwork. Tell us at enquiry what goes on the back and the front of your tractor.
Not for the NPORS category itself, which is about operating the machine on your own land, yard or site. Driving a tractor on a public road is governed separately by licence entitlement and age rules, which are nothing to do with this card. If your work involves road runs, tell us and we will flag what else you need to have in place.
Because PTO entanglement is one of the oldest and most serious causes of injury on farms, and it is entirely preventable. Guards in poor condition, worn shafts and people approaching a running machine are the pattern. The course covers guarding, shaft maintenance, correct speeds and, above all, the Safe Stop routine before anyone goes near a linkage or a shaft.
It depends where the tractor works. For construction and civils, the CSCS logo version is what gets you through the gate, and that needs a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass within the last two years. For farm, estate, grounds and private land work the traditional NPORS card is usually the sensible choice and avoids paying for a test you do not need. We will tell you which applies before you book.
Yes, and it is much the better option. Your people train on your own tractor and implements, on your gradients, through your gateways and in your yard, which is where they will actually be working. There are no scheduled dates: we run it around the seasonal work, when you can release people and a machine.
NPORS courses are priced per course, not per person. What you are paying for is the instructor, the registered tester and the machine time, so the figure turns on four things: the category, which route your operators need (novice, experienced, conversion or refresher), how many people are coming, and whether we run it on your site or at one of ours. It is also why a squad works out considerably cheaper per head than sending operators out one at a time. Then ask us and you will get a figure for that exact group rather than a list price with conditions attached.
We run NPORS courses across the UK rather than out of one fixed centre, and for most categories the better answer is that we come to you: your operators are assessed on the machine they will be using anyway, nobody loses a day travelling, and for a group it costs less.
