Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) eLearning
Online hand-arm vibration training covering HAVS and carpal tunnel syndrome, the exposure action and limit values, and why trigger time is the number that matters.
Who it is for
Who this hand-arm vibration course is for
Hand-arm vibration syndrome is permanent, disabling and entirely preventable. It affects anyone using vibrating tools regularly, and the damage is done long before the tingling starts.
- Construction and demolition operatives
- Grounds, forestry and agricultural workers
- Engineering, foundry and fabrication staff
- Maintenance and highways teams
- Supervisors planning tool use and job rotation
- Anyone using breakers, grinders, sanders or chainsaws
Course content
What the hand-arm vibration course covers
Six short modules covering the health effects, the exposure values, and the practical controls that reduce trigger time.
What vibration does
HAVS and carpal tunnel syndrome: the symptoms and why the damage is permanent.
Recognising the early signs
Tingling, numbness and blanching, and why early reporting protects your hands.
Exposure action and limit values
What the daily values mean and how trigger time drives exposure.
Assessing exposure
Tool vibration data, realistic trigger times and how exposure adds up over a day.
Controlling exposure
Better tools, better methods, job rotation, maintenance and limiting trigger time.
Health surveillance
Why it exists, what it involves, and what happens when symptoms are found.
Outcomes
What you will be able to do afterwards
- Explain what HAVS is and why it cannot be reversed
- Recognise the early symptoms in yourself or a colleague
- Explain what the exposure action and limit values require
- Estimate exposure from tool data and trigger time
- Apply practical controls that reduce trigger time
- Take part in health surveillance and report symptoms early
Your legal duty
The law behind hand-arm vibration training
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set a daily exposure action value and a daily exposure limit value for hand-arm vibration. They require employers to assess exposure, eliminate or reduce it, provide information, instruction and training, and put health surveillance in place where there is a risk to health.
Gloves are not the answer, and the course says so. So-called anti-vibration gloves do not reliably reduce exposure at the frequencies that cause HAVS. Relying on them instead of controlling trigger time is a common and costly mistake.

Practicalities
How the course works
For employers
Hand-Arm Vibration training for a team
Trigger time is managed by supervisors as much as by operatives, so training both together is what actually reduces exposure.
- One invoice instead of a card payment per person
- Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
- Completion and expiry reporting for your records
- Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
- Bespoke versions built around your own procedures
The same tools that vibrate usually create a noise exposure as well. See the Noise at Work course →
Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) eLearning: common questions
Where employees are exposed to vibration at or above the action value, the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 require suitable information, instruction and training. This course covers the awareness element.
Not reliably at the frequencies that cause HAVS. The course is direct about this because relying on gloves instead of reducing trigger time is a common mistake.
The actual time a tool is in use and vibrating, rather than the length of the job. It is the number that drives exposure, and the one most often overestimated by workers and underestimated by planners.
No. Symptoms may stop worsening if exposure stops early enough, but the damage already done is permanent. That is why early reporting and health surveillance matter.
About 30 minutes, with no time limit. Start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued the moment you finish.
Yes. It runs in a browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
Yes. Open a business account and we invoice you for the licences, which you allocate as people need them. Completion reporting is included.
