The NPORS N604 Grass Cutters – Mowers qualification is designed to ensure that operators are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently operate grass cutting machinery in various environments. This comprehensive training covers essential areas such as understanding industry hazards, conducting pre-operational checks, selecting appropriate machinery, and maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE). Participants will also learn to perform safe operational procedures, manage environmental considerations, and adhere to end-of-shift protocols. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS operator card, valid for up to five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to safety in grass cutting operations.

  • Understand Industry Responsibilities: Gain a foundational understanding of the landscaping and grounds maintenance industry, recognising inherent hazards and your responsibilities as a pedestrian mower operator.
  • Master Equipment Knowledge: Develop a working knowledge of the manufacturer's handbook for the specific machine used, enabling you to locate and identify major components and key controls, and explain their functions.
  • Conduct Pre-Operational Checks: Learn to perform all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements, ensuring the machine's safety and operational integrity before use.
  • Operate Safely and Efficiently: Prepare the pedestrian mower for use and operate it safely and efficiently, including navigating various terrains, managing vegetation, and understanding environmental considerations.
  • Maintain Appropriate PPE: Identify and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for pedestrian mower operations, such as safety boots, ear defenders, eye protection, gloves, and high-visibility clothing.
  • Perform End-of-Shift Procedures: Carry out all necessary safety checks at the work area, and execute end-of-shift and shutdown procedures, including the storage and transport of equipment.
Course Content

  • Understand industry hazards and responsibilities as a pedestrian mower operator.

  • Familiarise with the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific machine used.

  • Identify major components and key controls of the machine. 

  • Conduct pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements.

  • Select the suitable type of machine relative to the work being undertaken. 

  • Identify and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). 

  • Prepare the pedestrian mower for use. 

  • Set up exclusion zones and conduct necessary safety checks at the work area 

  • Operate the machinery safely and efficiently.

  • Consider environmental factors during operation. 

  • Store and transport the pedestrian mower correctly. 

  • Dispose of cut materials appropriately. 

  • Carry out end-of-shift and shutdown procedures.

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
