About the NPORS N802 Gritter and Snowplow

The NPORS N802 Gritter/Snowplough qualification is designed to provide operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient operation of gritter and snowplough vehicles. This comprehensive course covers key areas such as understanding industry hazards, adhering to health and safety legislation, conducting pre-operational checks, and mastering machine controls and functions. Delegates will also learn about environmental considerations, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for machine transportation and storage. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS operator card, valid for up to five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to maintaining high safety standards in gritter and snowplough operations.

  • Understand Industry Responsibilities: Gain a foundational understanding of the gritting and snowploughing industry, recognising inherent hazards and your responsibilities as an operator.
  • Master Equipment Knowledge: Develop a working knowledge of the manufacturer's handbook for the specific machine used, enabling you to locate and identify major components and key controls, and explain their functions.
  • Conduct Pre-Operational Checks: Learn to perform all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements, ensuring the machine's safety and operational integrity before use.
  • Operate Safely and Efficiently: Prepare the gritter/snowplough for use and operate it safely and efficiently, including navigating various terrains, managing loads, and understanding environmental considerations.
  • Maintain Appropriate PPE: Identify and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for gritter/snowplough operations, such as safety boots, ear defenders, eye protection, gloves, and high-visibility clothing.
  • Perform End-of-Shift Procedures: Carry out all necessary safety checks at the work area, and execute end-of-shift and shutdown procedures, including the storage and transport of equipment.
Course Content

  • Understand relevant health and safety legislation and safe working practices specific to snowplough operations.

  • Identify key components and controls of the snowplough and their functions.

  • Learn pre-operational and running checks using manufacturer guidelines and defect reporting procedures.

  • Recognise the importance and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Conduct safe machine operations including starting, stopping, and manoeuvring on various terrains.

  • Understand site-specific hazards such as height restrictions, slopes, and visibility issues.

  • Develop effective communication skills for working safely with others on site.

  • Complete post-operation checks and follow proper equipment shutdown and storage procedures

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
