About the NPORS N202 Excavator 360°

The NPORS N202 Excavator 360° qualification is designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient operation of 360° excavators. This comprehensive course covers key areas such as understanding industry hazards, adhering to health and safety legislation, conducting pre-operational checks, and mastering machine controls and functions. Delegates will also learn about environmental considerations, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for machine transportation and storage. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS operator card, valid for up to five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to maintaining high safety standards in excavation operations.

  • Understand Industry Risks and Responsibilities: Gain a foundational understanding of the construction industry, recognising the inherent dangers and your role in promoting safety as an Excavator operator.
  • Master Equipment Knowledge: Develop a working knowledge of the manufacturer's handbook for the specific machine to be used, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Conduct Pre-Operational Checks: Learn to perform all necessary pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements, ensuring the excavator is safe and ready for use.
  • Implement Effective Communication and Emergency Procedures: Establish clear communication protocols on-site and understand the steps to take in emergency situations, enhancing overall site safety and coordination.
  • Identify Underground Services and Ensure Safe Digging Practices: Acquire the skills to identify underground services and implement safe digging practices, minimising the risk of service disruptions and accidents during excavation operations.
  • Apply Safe Shutdown and Storage Procedures: Learn the correct procedures for end-of-shift shutdown and safe storage of the excavator, maintaining equipment integrity and site safety.
Course Content
  • Gain a foundational understanding of the construction industry, recognising the inherent dangers and your responsibilities as a plant operator.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific machine to be used, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Identify and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for excavator use, including safety boots, ear defenders, eye protection, dust masks, gloves, overalls, and hard hats.
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements, ensuring the machine is safe and ready for use. 
  • Safely mount and dismount the machine, following correct procedures and using safe handholds. 
  • Start and stop the engine, and safely move the machine off and stop it safely. 
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas. 
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area, considering factors such as ground conditions, overhead and underground services, and environmental considerations. 
  • Maneuver the machine to the work area and correctly configure it in readiness to carry out excavating tasks. 
  • Carry out excavating tasks, including digging trenches with vertical ends and backfilling. 
  • Load material onto transporting vehicles or into containers. 
  • Reinstate excavation, grade, and level ground.
  • Fit and remove attachments. 
  • Carry out all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures, ensuring the machine is safely stored and secured.
Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
