Who it is for

Who this DSE course is for

Display screen equipment covers far more than a desktop PC. If someone uses a screen as a significant part of their job, the DSE Regulations apply to them, whether they're in an office, at home, on a laptop at a client site, or at a fixed terminal on a factory floor.

  • Office staff and anyone who works at a desk
  • Homeworkers and hybrid workers using their own setup
  • Laptop and tablet users working away from a fixed desk
  • Call centre and customer service teams
  • Control room and fixed-terminal operators
  • Managers responsible for DSE assessments
  • New starters, as part of induction

Course content

What the DSE course covers

Five short lessons covering what screen work does to you, who the DSE Regulations cover, setting up a workstation and a laptop, breaks, and the self-assessment, then a 12-question assessment.

1

What DSE work does to you

The aches, eye strain and fatigue linked to screen work, and whether you count as a DSE user under the Regulations.

2

Setting up the workstation

Adjusting the chair, screen, keyboard, mouse and lighting so you can work comfortably.

3

Laptops and working away from the desk

Making laptop and tablet work sustainable at a desk, at home and on the move.

4

Posture, breaks and movement

Why breaks and changes of activity matter, how often to take them, and simple movement that reduces strain.

5

The self-assessment and your entitlements

Completing your employer's DSE self-assessment, your right to eye tests, and reporting problems.

Outcomes

What you will be able to do afterwards

  • Explain what DSE work can do to you and whether you count as a DSE user
  • Adjust your chair, screen, keyboard and mouse correctly
  • Set up a laptop so it stops causing neck and shoulder problems
  • Take breaks and changes of activity that actually reduce strain
  • Complete a DSE self-assessment and know what you are entitled to, including eye tests

Your legal duty

The law behind DSE training

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require employers to assess display screen equipment workstations, reduce the risks found, plan work so there are breaks or changes of activity, and provide eye and eyesight tests on request for users.

Training and information are part of the same package. Users must be given health and safety training in the use of any workstation they work at, and information about the risks and the measures taken. This course delivers that at awareness level and supports the self-assessment your employer collects.

  • Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2 and 7
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - risk assessment
  • Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 - the wider working environment

For employers

DSE training across an office or a hybrid workforce

DSE is the course most often needed for everybody, and hybrid working made it harder. You cannot walk round and look at a homeworker's desk. Training plus self-assessment is how most employers close that gap.

  • One invoice instead of a card payment per person
  • Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
  • Completion and expiry reporting for your health and safety file
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own assessment form and equipment

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) eLearning: common questions

For DSE users, yes. The 1992 Regulations require employers to provide health and safety training in the use of the workstation, along with information about the risks and the measures in place.

Very likely. It is about how much of your work depends on a screen, not the type of device. The course explains how the test works and how to make a laptop setup safe.

Yes. The Regulations follow the user, so homeworkers who are DSE users are covered. The self-assessment is how most employers manage a setup they cannot see.

DSE users can request an eye and eyesight test from their employer. The course explains what that covers and how to ask for it.

No. It trains the user and prepares them to complete a self-assessment. Acting on what comes back is still the employer's job.

About 30 to 45 minutes, with no time limit. The certificate is issued as soon as you pass the end assessment.

Yes. Open a business account and we invoice you for the licences. You allocate them as people join, and completion reporting is included.
