The NPORS N100 Excavator as a Crane qualification is designed to provide operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for safely conducting lifting operations using a 360° excavator. This comprehensive course covers key areas such as understanding industry hazards, adhering to health and safety legislation, conducting pre-operational checks, and mastering machine controls and functions. Delegates will also learn about environmental considerations, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for machine transportation and storage. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS operator card, valid for up to five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to maintaining high safety standards in excavation operations.
Understand the construction industry’s risks and your responsibilities as an operator, including compliance with health and safety legislation such as the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER.
Familiarise yourself with the manufacturer’s handbook and technical data, and adhere to relevant regulations and legislation.
Identify major components of the machine, including power units, hydraulic systems, undercarriage, wheels/tracks, booms, dipper arms, buckets, slewing, stability, ground pressures, ROPS, FOPS, attachments, and safety systems.
Locate and understand the functions of steering, driving, and braking controls, ensuring correct and sympathetic use to maintain safety and stability.
Safely mount and dismount the machine, start and stop the engine, and manoeuvre the machine across varying terrain in open and confined areas.
Conduct necessary safety checks at the work area, including identifying overhead/proximity hazards and ensuring a safe working environment.
Understand safe working loads, lifting capacity charts, and different lifting configurations and working ranges.
Identify and explain different lifting procedures, including tasks that fall into each category, and calculate estimated weights of loads.
Agree on signal codes/hand signals, direction of movement, safe working, and safe landing/placement zones with the slinger/signaller.
Ensure the excavator is in a safe condition for attachments to be fitted, check load integrity and security by carrying out a trial lift, and lift and move loads to designated positions safely and with minimal uncontrolled movement.
Consider environmental factors during operations and carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures.
The method of assessment is a three-step journey:
A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.
Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.
Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
