About Course

On this two-day QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work Refresher Course, Learners will refresh the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of first aid situations.

These skills include the ability to assess an incident, manage an unresponsive casualty, and implement CPR. The QNUK Level 3 in First Aid at Work Refresher Course will also go over how to respond to heart attacks, choking, head and spinal injuries, fractures, anaphylaxis, and more.

This First Aid at Work Requalification is aimed at those who have previously passed the three-day First Aid at Work or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid First Aid at Work certificate. Evidence must be provided of eligibility.

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a two-step journey:

Candidates will be observed to ensure that they can:

  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Identify when to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Demonstrate adult CPR using a manikin
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position
  • Identify when a casualty is choking
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a head-to-toe survey
  • A support sling, and
  • An elevated sling
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury supporting a conscious casualty on their back, or 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty with a bystander, or 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty using a log roll 
  • Demonstrate the use of a ‘training device’ adrenaline auto-injector

The examination consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. 

  • The pass mark for this examination is 28 correct answers.
  • There is a maximum time limit of 60 minutes. 
FAQs

The classroom course is held over 2 days.

Yes. On successful completion the learner will receive an accredited certificate. The certificate will be forwarded at a later date. A proof of pass can be immediately provided if required though.

 

Certification for this course is valid for 3 years but the HSE recommends a refresher course every year. To remain certified in this area, you will need to take the refresher course before the expiry date.

 

This qualification is aimed at those over 16 who are able to undertake the responsibilities associated with being a workplace emergency first aider.

Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole emergency first aider.

Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods.

Attendees will be required to demonstrate First Aid procedures as they would in a real work environment. This includes providing CPR to a casualty who is on the floor, therefore be physically capable of doing so.
