- School catering and kitchen teams
- PE and technology department staff
- Early years and nursery staff
- Office and reception staff handling deliveries

Safer technique
Planning a lift, the basic two-handed lift, carrying, lowering, and pushing and pulling.
School-specific tasks

Your legal duty
The law behind manual handling in education training
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 apply to schools exactly as they apply to any other employer: avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess what cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk of injury.
Who the employer is varies by school type: local authority, academy trust or governing body. That affects who holds the duty. The duty itself does not change.
- Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended)
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2 and 7
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - risk assessment
- The employer varies by school type; the duty does not

For non-school settings, the general manual handling course applies.
For employers
Manual Handling in Education training for a team
Schools have high seasonal turnover and a lot of casual handling. Covering all staff at induction is the practical approach.
- One invoice instead of a card payment per person
- Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
- Completion and expiry reporting for your records
- Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
- Bespoke versions built around your own procedures
