Which CSCS Card Do I Need?

Whether you are a skilled construction worker or simply require access to a construction site, a CSCS card provides essential proof that you have the training and qualifications for the job. Reflecting the skill level and occupation of each individual, there are a number of different Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards available to qualify for. Although having a CSCS card is not technically a legal requirement, the vast majority of employers require everyone working on site to hold the valid and relevant card for their role. If you are unsure which CSCS card you need to gain access to sites, read our helpful guide here.

Trainee & Skilled Worker CSCS Cards

Specifically aimed at individuals carrying out labouring duties, the basic green CSCS card is for is for entry-level workers on a construction site. For those registered on a recognised construction apprenticeship, the red CSCS apprentice card is issued free of charge. The temporary red experienced worker CSCS card is available for workers with on the job experience, who are registered to complete an approved construction related NVQ. If you have completed an apprenticeship, or achieved an equivalent construction related NVQ (at level 2 or 3), the blue and gold skilled worker CSCS cards are available upon passing of the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Supervisory & Managerial CSCS Cards

For those with elevated responsibilities on site, there are a number of supervisory CSCS cards that can be obtained, depending on your qualifications. The gold supervisory CSCS card is available for individuals within supervisor and technical roles, where an industry-approved construction related supervisory qualification has been obtained. Additionally, the black CSCS manager card is designed for managerial individuals who have obtained an approved construction related managerial qualification. For those with construction related degrees, including HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas, the AQP card is available.

To obtain any of these supervisory CSCS cards, a HS&E test for managers and professionals should be completed.

Gain Your CSCS Gold Supervisor Card

Across all construction and building sites, site supervisors are arguably the key component to a successful project. With their role of ensuring site safety, and effectively overseeing the work of others, supervisors must have undertaken the relevant qualifications to be able to hold this position. If you’re looking to prove your competency and become a site supervisor, having possession of a CSCS Gold Supervisor Card is imperative. To help prospective supervisors to gain this, Acadame provides our supervisory NVQs, as well as the CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (or SSSTS).

CSCS Gold Card Requirements

For those working with supervisory responsibilities, getting a supervisor qualification is the next step to gaining your CSCS Gold Card. Our Supervision & Management NVQs are designed to allow construction professionals to prove their knowledge and skills within their specific job role, and demonstrate their management competency. Site supervisors must have completed either our Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision, or Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision to be able to look at getting their CSCS Gold Card.

Additionally, applicants must have completed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past 2 years. The aim of the test is to examine supervisors’ knowledge across numerous topics in order to maintain construction site safety, and is completed in the format of short multiple choice questions.

CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)

Although not mandatory for a Gold CSCS card, many employers insist their supervisors complete a CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme to complement their learning. Our CITB SSSTS course in Stoke-On-Trent is an ideal way to improve your skills in terms of monitoring, organising, and administering groups of staff within the construction and civil engineering industries.

Is There Such Thing as An Accident?

Photo of a fire exit sign

How many accidents can be prevented? Why did 1.7 million people in the UK suffer from work related illnesses in the year 2020-2021? Anxiety and depression were a high proportion of this figure but given the years span across the coronavirus lockdowns, that might not be surprising. The shift in lifestyle was difficult for many to deal with – taking away a vital sense of community that benefits our mental health. But figures also show that a third of this figure incurred musculoskeletal problems. The course we provide for first aid at work in Derby and other areas in Staffordshire doesn’t just teach attendees how to deal with accidents but also how to prevent them.

Prevent Preventable Accidents

Some stringent people believe accidents never happen. Most people believe this holds people to a higher standard than what might be reasonable, especially given the fact everybody has free will and we need to be conscious of the decisions we are making. Even upper management with the fate of their business at stake acknowledge that sometimes, everybody makes mistakes. What our course for first aid at work in Derby helps to drive home is that accidents can be prevented and their impact on workflow lessened by swift and effective responses. It builds the confidence of the attendee as they know they will be equipped with the power to respond without high anxiety and with the right actions in place.

Act Now – Act Fast

Don’t wait until a major accident happens in your workplace – empower your team today. The only thing that builds confidence effectively is lived experience. When you know you have dealt with a problem that inspires nervousness beforehand, even in a trained environment, you can spring into action when it really matters.

Minimise Staff Sickness with HSA

Photo of hard hats on the floor

Health and safety shouldn’t be shrugged at. It might seem like a ‘boring’ topic on the surface, since most people look at only the stereotype of innocuous rules being drawn up by men in suits for the fun of arbitrary admin, but the reality is very different. Health and safety legislation is put in place to protect your business from financial and reputational damage, your employees from incurring injury and workflow from being interrupted by unforeseen accidents. Whether you are looking for engaging training courses on HSA in Stafford or a surrounding area, Acadame are a great place to turn for a fresh new approach to the topic.

Musculoskeletal Disorders

In 2017, stress took over from musculoskeletal disorders as being the UK’s biggest work-related illness. Health and safety measures can be partially thanked for the apparent decrease in musculoskeletal disorders, however there were still thousands of accidents at work occurring that could have been avoided. These numbers are echoed in more recent years but 2017 marks a significant turning point with regards to work-related illnesses and highlights how important having health and safety aware staff is to sustain consistent workflow is at your business.

Specialist Courses

We believe staff training courses should be fun, interactive, and memorable in order to make an impact. Rather than box-ticking, courses such as HSA in Stafford are designed to make your employees think about its contents while they return to their daily duties. Successful construction supervision: SSSTS

Man on a construction site wearing a hard hat and high vis while on the phone

SSSTS: Site Safety Plus / Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme

It is no secret that working in the construction industry has a unique set of risks and lots of them, from heavy machinery, exposed electricity, excavations and even just the Great British weather. Comprised health and safety not only pose danger to the workers on site but can also significantly hinder the progress of a project, increase workflows and reduce profitability, with one major incident halting work while an investigation takes place. One way to keep things running smoothly is to prevent accidents by equipping the supervisory staff with suitable health and safety training. Our SSSTS course in Stoke is just the ticket – so what’s all the fuss about?

Supervisors

Designed for supervisors or those who want to progress and become one, the SSSTS course in Stoke is for those who oversee a team or want to, no matter how small or large. Supervisors are generally the middle point of contact between staff members and the managerial staff and so it is vital that they can be relied on by those both below and above them in the hierarchy to provide safety and challenge poor safety. This course is delivered in a legislative context, and covers law that effects decision-making processes, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. By ensuring Acadame learners become familiar with the legal implications of their procedures, our trainers can then equip them with the necessary information needed to complete a risk assessment that covers a range of realistic scenarios.

Why?

The CITB SSSTS course covers a variety of situations including demolition work, fire hazards, working at heights, electrical dangers and confined spaces. By providing supervisors with training that makes them effective at managing and reducing these risks, businesses who enrol them on the course can boost the overall success of the organisation by preventing injury to members of staff and making sure all practices are legally compliant.

For more information about our SSSTS course running not just in Stoke-on-Trent but nationally, book or just contact our team to discuss.
