About the NPORS N108 MEWP Boom

The NPORS N108 Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Boom course is designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and efficiently operate MEWP Boom equipment. This comprehensive training programme combines theoretical instruction with hands-on exercises, covering key areas such as pre-operational checks, safe manoeuvring, emergency procedures, and adherence to relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER regulations. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS-accredited certification, valid for five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to industry standards.

  • Industry Awareness: Develop a foundational understanding of the MEWP Boom industry, recognising potential hazards and appreciating your responsibilities as a plant operator.
  • Machine Familiarity: Learn to locate and identify major components of the MEWP Boom, including steering, driving, and braking controls, and understand their functions.
  • Safety Procedures: Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements, ensuring the machine's safety and compliance.
  • Operational Competence: Safely mount and dismount the MEWP Boom, configure it for travel, and manoeuvre it across various terrains in both open and confined areas.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Understand how to check and utilise all emergency lowering functions, preparing you to respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarise yourself with relevant legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, LOLER, and Work at Height Regulations, ensuring your operations meet legal standards.
Course Content
  • Understanding the industry, associated hazards, and operator responsibilities.
  • Gaining knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook, relevant regulations, and legislation.
  • Identifying major components of the machine and explaining their functions.
  • Locating and understanding all operating controls and their functions.
  • Conducting pre-operational checks in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements.
  • Checking all emergency lowering functions.
  • Safely mounting and dismounting the machine.
  • Configuring the machine for travel and manoeuvring it safely on level ground and inclines in open and confined areas.
  • Conducting all necessary safety checks at the work area, including overhead and underground hazards.
  • Carrying out accessing tasks at various points up to full operating height.
Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
