The NPORS N610 Hand Held Hedge Trimmer course is designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient use of hand-held hedge trimmers in various settings, including landscaping, grounds maintenance, and horticulture. This comprehensive training covers key areas such as understanding industry hazards, conducting pre-operational checks, selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and adhering to relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and PUWER regulations. Upon successful completion, candidates will be proficient in operating hand-held hedge trimmers in compliance with safety standards, thereby improving workplace safety and operational efficiency.
Understand the hazards associated with hedge trimming and the operator’s responsibilities under health and safety legislation.
Gain familiarity with the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific equipment being used.
Identify and explain the functions of major components and key controls of the hedge trimmer.
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements.
Select the appropriate type of hedge trimmer (petrol, electric, or battery-powered) relative to the work being undertaken.
Identify and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for hedge trimmer use.
Prepare the hedge trimmer for use, including starting procedures and ensuring safe operation.
Operate the hedge trimmer safely and efficiently, adhering to best practices and manufacturer guidelines.
Consider environmental factors, including proper disposal of trimmed materials and minimising impact.
Perform end-of-shift procedures, including equipment shutdown, maintenance, and storage.
The method of assessment is a three-step journey:
A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.
Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.
Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
