About First Aid At Work Refresher Training

The two-day QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work Refresher course provides learners with the opportunity to update, strengthen, and maintain the vital skills required to deal with a range of workplace emergencies. This first aid at work refresher training ensures participants remain confident and competent in applying life-saving techniques and responding effectively in high-pressure situations.

During the course, learners will review how to assess an incident, manage unresponsive casualties, and carry out CPR correctly. The first aid refresher course also revisits how to recognise and treat a variety of medical emergencies, including heart attacks, choking, severe bleeding, shock, fractures, head and spinal injuries, and anaphylaxis. These essential topics are covered through practical sessions and scenario-based exercises to reinforce understanding and ensure practical competence.

This first aid at work requalification is designed for individuals who have already completed the full three-day First Aid at Work course or a previous first aid refresher training and currently hold a valid certificate. To take part in this first aid at work refresher, participants must provide proof of their existing qualification before attending.

Completing this first aid refresher enables learners to continue meeting workplace first aid requirements and maintain compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations. By keeping these skills current, participants can respond quickly and confidently when emergencies occur, helping to create a safer working environment for everyone.

How Completing the First Aid Refresher Course Will Help You:

This First Aid at Work Refresher training is designed for individuals who take on the responsibilities of a designated workplace first aider. The course ensures participants maintain the essential knowledge and confidence needed to respond effectively to a wide range of medical emergencies in the workplace.

  • the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • the need for consent to provide First Aid
  • conducting a scene survey
  • conducting a primary survey of a casualty

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a two-step journey:

Candidates will be observed to ensure that they can:

  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Identify when to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Demonstrate adult CPR using a manikin
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position
  • Identify when a casualty is choking
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a head-to-toe survey
  • A support sling, and
  • An elevated sling
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury supporting a conscious casualty on their back, or 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty with a bystander, or 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty using a log roll 
  • Demonstrate the use of a ‘training device’ adrenaline auto-injector

The examination consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. 

  • The pass mark for this examination is 28 correct answers.
  • There is a maximum time limit of 60 minutes.

Yes. On successful completion of the first aid at work refresher training, you will receive a QNUK Level 3 certificate, which is recognised for workplace compliance.

The certificate issued after the first aid at work requalification is valid for three years, after which another first aid refresher is required to maintain compliance.

Yes. To enrol in the first aid at work refresher course, you must hold a valid First Aid at Work certificate from either the initial three-day course or a previous refresher. Proof of eligibility must be provided before the course.
