Grandfather Rights Are Ending for CSCS Cards: What You Need to Know

As of December 31, 2024, the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) will end the renewal of cards issued under Grandfather Rights (also known as Industry Accreditation). This change requires that all construction workers previously qualified through experience, rather than a formal qualification, must now complete an accredited course to maintain their CSCS card status.

What Are Grandfather Rights in CSCS?

Historically, Grandfather Rights allowed workers to obtain CSCS cards based on their industry experience and employer recommendations rather than formal qualifications. However, in a push for a fully qualified workforce, the Construction Leadership Council and CSCS have phased out these rights. As a result, all CSCS cards issued through this pathway will become invalid on January 1, 2025, affecting thousands of workers across the construction sector.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

The construction industry has increasingly emphasised the need for a formally qualified workforce to ensure high standards of safety and competence. CSCS is committed to creating a safe work environment by requiring that all cardholders possess recognised qualifications. This move aims to instil confidence in clients, regulators, and the public that construction workers are trained to a high standard and equipped to perform their roles safely.

How to Transition and Maintain Your CSCS Card

If you currently hold a CSCS card under Grandfather Rights, you will need to follow one of several paths to obtain a new qualification:

  1. Enroll in an NVQ Program: Complete a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) specific to your role. This option provides a practical, assessment-based route that evaluates your competency on the job.
  2. Apprenticeship Pathways: For those early in their careers, apprenticeship programs offer a structured learning environment and a path to the required qualifications.
  3. Academic Qualifications: If you have an HNC, HND, or other relevant degree, this may qualify you for a new card with additional requirements, such as passing the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test.
What Happens If You Don’t Transition?

Failing to update your qualification by the deadline will mean that your CSCS card becomes invalid. This could restrict your ability to work on construction sites where a CSCS card is mandatory. The card expiration will impact not only on-site roles but also on higher-level positions that previously allowed Grandfather Rights, including Site Supervisor and Site Manager roles.
