The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS Refresher) course is specifically designed for individuals who have previously completed the full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or a subsequent SMSTS refresher course, and who can provide valid proof of attendance. It is aimed at site managers, project leaders, and others in senior roles who are responsible for overseeing health and safety on construction sites.
The course serves to renew your existing certification by updating your knowledge of current health and safety legislation, standards, and best practices. It offers a detailed review of key regulatory changes and their implications in the workplace, ensuring that managers remain compliant with their legal responsibilities and are fully equipped to manage site safety effectively.
Our SMSTS Refresher builds on the original training content, while also introducing updated topics that reflect the latest developments in construction site safety and leadership. Participants will revisit core principles, explore new case studies, and take part in practical discussions that reinforce their understanding of site management obligations.
It is important to complete the SMSTS refresher course before your existing certificate expires. Failure to do so will mean you must take the full five-day SMSTS course again to regain your qualification, which can be more time-consuming and costly. Maintaining your SMSTS certification through a timely refresher helps support safe, legally compliant site management.

2. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act
The legal duties of the employer, self-employed and, to a lesser extent, employee, to promote health and safety awareness and effective standards of safety management by every employer.
3. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
CDM Regulations that cover the management of health, safety and welfare on construction projects. What they are about, what they require, what needs to be done and by whom.
4. Health and safety policies
The key principles of a health and safety policy and the organisation’s arrangements for putting those policies in place. The key benefits of the policy, what it should contain and how it should be used.

The SMSTS Refresher Course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate. It is aimed at site managers, project leaders, and others in senior construction roles who need to renew their qualification before it expires.
To keep your SMSTS certificate valid, you must complete a refresher within five years of the original training. If your certificate expires, you’ll be required to take the full five-day course again to maintain your qualification.
The SMSTS Refresher runs over two days. It’s designed to update your knowledge of legal responsibilities, health and safety regulations, and site management best practices in a condensed format.
If your SMSTS certificate has lapsed, you won’t be eligible for the refresher. You’ll need to retake the full SMSTS five-day course to regain your certification.
Topics include health and safety law, CDM Regulations, site setup, fire prevention, manual handling, working at height, welfare provisions, and mental health. The course also covers leadership, accident reporting, and managing plant and lifting operations.
Assessment is via a CITB-set exam with multiple-choice and written questions. To pass, learners must achieve 80% and correctly answer all five safety-critical questions included in the exam paper.
Yes, we offer live online training sessions as well as in-person courses in Manchester, Liverpool, and Stoke-on-Trent. On-site training for teams is also available upon request.
Yes, employers registered with CITB may be eligible for a Tier 3 grant of £120 to help cover the cost of the SMSTS Refresher Course. Our team can assist with guidance on claiming this.
