About this course
Managing Safely is the course most employers mean when they say their supervisors need health and safety training. IOSH wrote it for managers and supervisors in any sector, in organisations of any size, and it assumes no safety background at all.
The three days are practical rather than academic. You leave able to do a risk assessment properly, to say what the law actually asks of you, to investigate something that went wrong without turning it into a witch hunt, and to measure whether what you are doing is working.
We run it in a classroom at our centres, live online, and at your own premises for a group anywhere in the UK. Live dates are on this page and the next few are at the top of it.

Where it sits
Managing Safely, the refresher, and what comes after it
IOSH are clear that a Managing Safely certificate does not expire. What they recommend is the one day Managing Safely Refresher to stay current, which anyone who has completed the full course can take. Plenty of employers put their managers through it every three years as a matter of policy rather than because IOSH require it.
It is a course, not a qualification. That is the honest difference between this and NEBOSH: Managing Safely gives a manager what they need to run their own area safely, while the NEBOSH General Certificate is a qualification for somebody whose job is health and safety.
If your people supervise construction sites specifically, sites ask for SSSTS or SMSTS rather than IOSH, and the two sit alongside each other rather than replacing one another.

Method of assessment
How IOSH Managing Safely is assessed
IOSH set the assessment and it is taken at the end of the course rather than weeks later. It comes in two parts.
Take part across the three days
The course is built on worked examples and discussion, so the days do the teaching. Full attendance is expected before the assessment.
Sit the 30 question paper
A written paper of 30 questions covering the six topics, taken at the end of the course rather than sent away and marked weeks later.
Complete the risk assessment project
The practical half. You carry out a risk assessment on a real hazard from your own workplace, which is the part that makes the course worth sending somebody on.
Certificate
An IOSH Managing Safely certificate. IOSH state that it does not expire, and every genuine IOSH certificate can be verified online.

Managing Safely is a course for a manager who has safety as part of the job. The NEBOSH General Certificate is a qualification for someone whose job is health and safety. If you are deciding between them, tell us what the role actually involves and we will say which one fits.
Sites normally ask for CITB Site Safety Plus, so SSSTS for a supervisor and SMSTS for a manager. IOSH Managing Safely is widely recognised but it is not the certificate a site gate is looking for. The two sit alongside each other.
