Who it is for

Who this asbestos awareness course is for

Any building built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos. The people most at risk are not asbestos removers. They are tradespeople who drill, cut or lift something without knowing what is behind it.

  • Electricians, plumbers, joiners and heating engineers
  • Maintenance, caretaking and facilities staff
  • Builders, roofers and demolition workers
  • Surveyors and property professionals
  • Cable, telecoms and alarm installers
  • Anyone working on buildings built or refurbished before 2000

Course content

What the asbestos awareness course covers

Six short modules on recognising the risk and stopping work safely. This is awareness training, not a licence to work with asbestos.

1

What asbestos is

The types, why it was used so widely, and why it is still in so many buildings.

2

The health risks

Asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, and the long delay before symptoms appear.

3

Where it is found

Common locations in buildings, from insulation and boards to floor tiles and cement sheets.

4

The duty to manage

The asbestos register and management plan, and how to find out what is in a building before you start.

5

Avoiding disturbance

Safe working practices that prevent fibre release, and the jobs that most often go wrong.

6

If you find or disturb it

Stopping work, preventing spread, reporting, and what happens next.

Outcomes

What you will be able to do afterwards

  • Recognise buildings and materials likely to contain asbestos
  • Explain the health risks and why there is no safe level of exposure
  • Find and use an asbestos register before starting work
  • Avoid the activities most likely to release fibres
  • Stop work and raise the alarm correctly if you suspect asbestos
  • Say what work you must never carry out without a licence

Your legal duty

The law behind asbestos awareness training

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require employers to prevent exposure to asbestos so far as is reasonably practicable, and to ensure that anyone liable to disturb asbestos during their work receives adequate information, instruction and training. That awareness training is what this course provides.

The Regulations also place a duty to manage asbestos on those responsible for maintenance of non-domestic premises. That's why an asbestos register should exist and should be consulted before work begins.

  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • The duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2 and 3
  • Licensed and notifiable non-licensed work require more than awareness training

For employers

Asbestos Awareness training for a team

Asbestos awareness is a standard requirement for trades and maintenance teams. It's one clients ask to see before letting anyone on site.

  • One invoice instead of a card payment per person
  • Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
  • Completion and expiry reporting for your records
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own procedures

Non-licensed and licensed asbestos work needs accredited, task-specific training. This awareness course does not cover it. See accredited asbestos courses →

Asbestos Awareness eLearning: common questions

No, and that is important. Asbestos awareness training tells you how to avoid disturbing asbestos and what to do if you find it. Non-licensed and licensed work require separate, accredited, task-specific training.

Anyone whose work could foreseeably disturb asbestos: trades, maintenance and refurbishment workers, and their supervisors, under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Refresher training is expected to keep awareness current. Many employers and clients ask for it annually; the certificate here is valid for three years.

A duty on those responsible for maintenance of non-domestic premises to find out whether asbestos is present, record it, assess the risk and manage it. The register that results is what you should check before starting work.

About 30 minutes, with no time limit. Start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued the moment you finish.

Yes. It runs in a browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
