Your legal duty
The law behind environmental awareness training
The Environmental Protection Act 1990 sits behind much of the UK's waste and pollution control regime, including the duty of care that applies to anyone who produces, handles or disposes of controlled waste. Other duties sit in separate regimes covering permits, discharges and specific waste streams.
Unlike health and safety, there is no single regulation requiring environmental awareness training by name. It is required in practice by ISO 14001, which expects an organisation to ensure people are aware of the environmental policy, their impacts and their responsibilities, and by clients who ask for evidence in tenders.
