Who it is for

Who this fire warden in education course is for

A school fire warden works differently from an office one. Classes evacuate as groups with their teacher, and the warden's job is the areas nobody is responsible for: toilets, offices, corridors, practical rooms and anywhere a pupil might be alone.

  • Nominated school fire wardens and marshals
  • Site and premises staff
  • School business managers and bursars
  • Senior staff with evacuation duties
  • Deputies covering the warden role
  • Anyone taking on the role for the first time

Your legal duty

The law behind fire warden in education training

In England and Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to make arrangements for evacuation, nominate competent people to implement them, and provide adequate fire safety training. In a school, that's usually done by nominating wardens.

Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under their own fire safety legislation, and who the responsible person is in a school depends on the school type.

Fire Warden in Education eLearning: common questions

There is no fixed ratio in law. It depends on the size and layout of the site, the number of blocks, and the hours the building is occupied, including clubs and lettings.

Classes evacuate as groups with their teacher, so the warden concentrates on the spaces nobody is responsible for and on supporting assisted evacuation.

It covers the knowledge. A warden also needs to know your building and take part in your drills, which cannot be done online.

It covers the principle that arrangements must work whenever the building is occupied. Your own procedures cover the specifics for lettings.

About 30 minutes, with no time limit: start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued the moment you finish.
