About this course
The NPORS N723 Harness and Fall Arrest category is a short course for anybody issued with a harness and lanyard for work at height. Roofers, steel erectors, cladding and facade teams, telecoms and utilities, plant fitters, warehouse maintenance, tanker and vehicle loading, MEWP operators and anyone working near an edge or an opening. It is a safety course rather than an operator ticket: there is no machine to drive, and the aim is that the equipment issued is understood, fitted correctly, inspected and anchored somewhere that will hold.
The frame is the Work at Height Regulations 2005, which set a hierarchy: avoid work at height where you reasonably can, use work equipment or other measures to prevent a fall where you cannot avoid the work, and where the risk of a fall remains, use equipment to minimise the distance and consequences. Personal fall protection sits at the bottom of that order, not the top, and within it there is an important distinction. Work restraint is arranged so the person physically cannot get to the edge. Fall arrest allows a fall and then stops it, with forces the body and the anchor both have to survive. Restraint is the better answer wherever the work allows it.
The rest of the half day is the detail that decides whether the equipment works. The difference between a full body harness and a work positioning belt. Lanyards, energy absorbers and self retracting devices, and the clearance each one needs below the anchor before the person stops. Anchor point selection, and the fact that an anchor has to be capable of taking the load rather than simply being available. Pre use checks on webbing, stitching, connectors and labels. And the point candidates remember: a harness only ever works if it is adjusted properly and clipped to something that will hold.

Who should attend?
Roofing, cladding and facade work, steel erection, telecoms and utilities, tower and mast work, tree and grounds work, plant fitters and maintenance engineers, warehouse and factory maintenance, tanker and vehicle loading, and MEWP operators in boom type platforms. It suits anyone issued with a harness, including people who use one rarely, because rare use is when it is most likely to be fitted wrongly. It is not a rope access qualification, a rescue technician course or a fall protection equipment inspector course, and it does not authorise anyone to design an anchor system.
Entry requirements. You should be at least eighteen for most site work, fit enough to wear a harness and take part in practical exercises, and able to follow spoken and written English well enough for the theory test, with reading support available on request. Tell us about any condition affected by working at height or by wearing a harness. No prior card or experience is needed. For the version of the card that carries the CSCS logo you need a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass taken within the last two years, which we can book. Method of assessment
How the N723 harness and fall arrest test works
NPORS assess the category with a theory test and a practical assessment. Both run with us, because Acadame is an NPORS test centre as well as a training provider, and the practical is carried out at low level rather than at height.
1. Enquiry and group
Tell us how many people need it and what equipment they are issued with. NPORS allow ten candidates to one instructor, so a half day covers a group of ten and two groups fit into a single day. We quote per group.
2. Pre course check
We confirm who is attending, check whether the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is in date for the CSCS logo version, agree whether we use your equipment or ours, and take the details NPORS need.
3. Training
Classroom on the law, the equipment, anchors and rescue, then practical fitting, adjustment and inspection using the kit your people actually wear.
4. Theory test
The NPORS theory test covering legislation, equipment, restraint and arrest, anchors, inspection and rescue.
5. Practical assessment
You inspect the equipment, fit and adjust the harness unaided, connect to a suitable anchor and identify faults, assessed against the NPORS specification for the category at low level.
6. Registration and card
We register the pass with NPORS and the N723 category goes on the card. With a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test the card carries the CSCS logo.
After the course
The two things a harness course does not give you
The first is an anchor. Training tells people how to judge whether an anchor point is suitable, but somebody still has to provide anchors that are fit for purpose where the work happens, and that is a design and planning job rather than a training one. If your team is clipping to whatever is nearest because nothing better exists, the course will make that obvious and it needs fixing at site level.
The second is a rescue. A person suspended in a harness needs recovering quickly, and an arrangement that depends on the fire service arriving is not a plan. Decide who is doing the recovery, with what equipment, and how long it will realistically take. Alongside that, keep the inspection regime running: pre use checks by the wearer every time, and the more detailed periodic inspection that the equipment manufacturer specifies, recorded so that anyone can see when a harness is due or overdue.

Half a day, with a maximum of ten candidates to one instructor. Two half day groups can be run back to back in a single day, which is how most sites cover a whole team in one visit.
No. It is a short safety course covering the use and inspection of harness and fall arrest equipment. There is no machine and no operating assessment. It sits alongside operator categories rather than replacing any of them.
Work restraint is set up so the person physically cannot reach the edge, so no fall happens. Fall arrest allows a fall and then stops it, which puts loads through the body, the equipment and the anchor, and needs enough clearance below to work. Where the task allows it, restraint is the better arrangement and the course teaches it that way.
There is no fixed interval in law. The requirement is that people are competent for the work, which means training is refreshed when equipment, working methods or the person's role changes, and periodically to keep it current. Many sites work to a three year cycle for this kind of short safety training, and the NPORS card has its own expiry.
Before every use by the person wearing it, and periodically in more detail to the manufacturer's instructions, with the result recorded. The course covers what a pre use check involves and what should take a harness straight out of service, such as damaged webbing, broken stitching, a deployed energy absorber or a missing or unreadable label.
Yes, and we would rather do so. People learn on the harness they will actually wear, the faults found during inspection are real, and you get an honest view of the state of your kit. Tell us what you are issued with when you enquire.
It is not a formal prerequisite, but it is sensible for boom platform operators, because recognised guidance recommends a harness with a restraint length lanyard in boom type platforms. Plenty of firms run the two together so operators understand the equipment as well as the machine.
No. The assessment is carried out at low level, with fitting, adjustment, inspection and connection to a suitable anchorage. That keeps the training itself safe while still assessing the things that decide whether the equipment works when it matters.

What you are paying for is the instructor, the registered tester and the machine time, so the figure turns on four things: the category, which route your operators need (novice, experienced, conversion or refresher), how many people are coming, and whether we run it on your site or at one of ours. It is also why a squad works out considerably cheaper per head than sending operators out one at a time.
