NVQ Level 3 Occupational Health and Safety

Both sit at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, the same level as an A level. The NEBOSH General Certificate is a knowledge qualification, taught and examined. The NVQ is a competence qualification, assessed on what you actually do at work. Employers often want both, and IOSH count either as the qualification part of Technical membership. If you already hold the NEBOSH, the NVQ adds the proof of practice.

No. There is no classroom and no exam. Everything is assessed on the safety work you already do, through a portfolio of your own documents, an observation of you working and a professional discussion with your assessor, most of it by Zoom or Teams.

Yes. CSCS list this qualification in their own Card Finder against the occupation Health and Safety Officer Construction, and it returns the Gold Supervisor card. You need the certificate and a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for Specialists: Supervisors within the last two years, which is not the Operatives test and not the Managers and Professionals test. We book the right one with you.

IOSH ask for a Level 3 to Level 5 occupational safety and health qualification and at least a year of practical health and safety experience for Technical membership (TechIOSH). This is a Level 3 occupational safety and health qualification. IOSH assess each application on the certificate and the experience together, so check with their membership team if your case is unusual. Certified and Chartered membership need a Level 6, which is where the Level 6 NVQ comes in.

As long as you take. There is no fixed duration, no cohort and no term dates: you register any week and the qualification is led by you. Most people finish in three to six months alongside the job, and someone with a full file of risk assessments, inspection records and investigation reports can be much quicker.

Documents you already produce: risk assessments with your name on them, procedures and safe systems of work you wrote or revised, inspection checklists and monitoring records, accident and near miss investigation reports, toolbox talk registers, safety meeting minutes, photographs of the workplace. Your assessor maps each one to a unit and tells you what is missing.

You carry on from the work in front of you. Nothing has to exist on day one: your assessor plans the units around what your role will produce over the next few months, and anything your job does not produce is planned with you and your employer. Evidence can come from more than one workplace if you move jobs.

Yes. Employers can be invoiced and interest free instalments are available on every qualification. CITB grant may be available to CITB registered employers, and ELCAS funding if you are a service leaver or veteran. We check what applies to you before you commit.
