Nebosh General

Studied for me Nebosh General in Feb 26 with Alan Starr. Very pleased with all the support from both Alan and Matt, very happy to have passed. I feel without the support this enabled me to get my Nebosh. The course was full of examples and scenarios, which gave a better insight of expectations and real life situations. Thanks so much Academe, I will be enrolling a few members of my management team to complete IOSH in the near future.

The assessment journey is made up of three stages:

Step 1. Open Book Examination (GNC1)

You will complete an open book assessment based on a realistic workplace scenario, applying your knowledge to a series of tasks.

Step 2. Closing Interview

Following the open book assessment, a short closing interview is arranged. This confirms authenticity and gives you the opportunity to discuss your submission.

Step 3. Practical Risk Assessment (GNC2)

You will complete a practical workplace risk assessment, demonstrating that you can apply your learning in a real working environment.

At Acadame, preparation for all assessment stages is supported through your named 1:1 Individual Learning Advisor, structured revision support, and access to our embedded online portal.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is directly aligned with the legal framework that governs workplace health and safety in the UK. Understanding that framework is not just useful context for those in management or supervisory roles; it is a core part of their job.

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a general duty on employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of their employees so far as is reasonably practicable. It also requires employers to provide such information, instruction, training, and supervision as is necessary to ensure health and safety. The NEBOSH General Certificate directly fulfils the training and knowledge component of that duty for those with health and safety responsibilities.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments, implement appropriate control measures, and establish clear health and safety management arrangements. The GNC1 and GNC2 units map directly onto these requirements; GNC1 builds the management knowledge, and GNC2 tests the ability to carry out a real workplace risk assessment.

For organisations, having managers and supervisors who hold the NEBOSH National General Certificate is a recognised indicator of competence. In the event of a workplace incident, enforcement action, or civil claim, demonstrating that relevant personnel were appropriately trained is a material factor. The NEBOSH General Certificate is one of the most widely accepted demonstrations of that competence in UK workplaces.

It is also worth noting that many organisations specify the NEBOSH National General Certificate in job descriptions for health and safety roles, and some insurers and procurement frameworks reference it as a benchmark for health and safety competence. Holding this qualification is not just about legal compliance; it is about being taken seriously as a competent person in the field.

What is the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is the benchmark certificate-level qualification for managing workplace health and safety in the UK. It is widely recognised by employers across all sectors and is commonly specified in job descriptions for health and safety roles. It covers the principles of health and safety management, risk assessment, workplace hazards, and incident investigation, assessed through an open book exam, a closing interview, and a practical workplace risk assessment.

Is the NEBOSH General Certificate a good qualification for starting a health and safety career?

Yes. The NEBOSH National General Certificate is consistently regarded as the leading entry-level qualification for those beginning or developing a career in occupational health and safety. It is referenced in the majority of health and safety job postings in the UK and is the qualification that most employers expect candidates to hold when applying for dedicated health and safety roles. It also supports applications for professional membership with bodies such as Tech IOSH and AIIRSM.

Can service leavers or veterans use ELCAS funding for this course?

Yes. Acadame is an ELCAS-approved provider, making the NEBOSH National General Certificate a strong option for service leavers and veterans looking to use their Enhanced Learning Credits to move into civilian health and safety roles. The transferable skills developed in the armed forces align well with many of the competencies assessed in this qualification.

How is the NEBOSH General Certificate assessed?

The qualification has two units. GNC1 is assessed through an open book assessment completed over a set period, followed by a closing interview with a tutor. The open book format allows candidates to refer to their materials, but the assessment focuses on applying knowledge to a realistic scenario rather than recalling facts. GNC2 is a practical risk assessment carried out in a real workplace, submitted independently for marking.

What grades are available for the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

Results are graded Pass, Credit, or Distinction across both units. This is one of the key differences between the NEBOSH General Certificate and Award-level NEBOSH qualifications such as the NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work Award or the NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment, which are graded Pass or Refer only.

Do I get support with the assessments?

Yes. Every Acadame candidate is assigned a named Individual Learning Advisor who provides planned 1:1 support sessions throughout the course. Advisors help candidates prepare for both the GNC1 open book assessment and the GNC2 practical risk assessment, reviewing progress and building confidence at each stage. Candidates also have access to our embedded eLearning portal for structured revision and additional support between sessions.

Can I study the NEBOSH National General Certificate online?

Yes. Acadame offers flexible study options including classroom delivery, live online learning, and blended approaches. All options include access to our digital learning portal and support from a named Individual Learning Advisor, so the level of support does not change based on how you choose to study.

How long does the NEBOSH National General Certificate take to complete?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate typically requires between 80 and 130 hours of guided learning, depending on the candidate’s prior knowledge and chosen study route. This includes taught sessions, self-study, and preparation for both assessments. The exact duration will vary depending on whether you study through classroom, online, or blended delivery.

Do I need any previous qualifications to enrol?

No. There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate. However, NEBOSH recommends that candidates have a reasonable standard of English, as the assessments require written responses. Candidates who have previously completed an Award-level NEBOSH qualification such as the NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work Award may find the transition to certificate level more straightforward, but this is not a requirement.

Where can I take the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

Acadame delivers the NEBOSH General Certificate at our training centres in Stoke, Derby, Manchester, and Liverpool. Onsite delivery is available nationwide for organisations wanting to train groups at their own premises. Through our managed service and partner network, we can also support wider UK delivery for employers needing local options. Contact us to discuss the right format for your needs.

Does the NEBOSH General Certificate expire?

No. The NEBOSH National General Certificate does not have an expiry date. However, ongoing professional development is strongly recommended to ensure knowledge remains current, particularly as legislation, guidance, and best practice evolve. Many employers and professional bodies expect certificate holders to engage in continuing professional development as part of demonstrating ongoing competence.

What can I do after completing the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

Many candidates use the NEBOSH National General Certificate to move into dedicated health and safety roles, strengthen their current position, or progress to higher-level qualifications. The most common next step for those pursuing a professional career in health and safety is the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, which is the qualification underpinning Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH). Others use the General Certificate as a platform to specialise, moving into areas such as construction safety, fire safety, or environmental management.

What is a ‘competent person’ in health and safety, and does this qualification help?

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers are required to appoint one or more competent persons to assist them in meeting their health and safety duties. A competent person is defined as someone with sufficient training, experience, knowledge, and other qualities to enable them to assist in undertaking the measures needed. The NEBOSH National General Certificate is widely recognised as one of the most appropriate qualifications for those taking on this role, and many organisations specify it as a minimum requirement for their appointed competent person.
