This CITB Leadership & Management course in Achieving Performance Through People was developed by the construction specialists Acadame.

Delivered at our centre in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, virtually online or on-site; the purpose of this standard is to enable the delegate to develop knowledge and understanding of using leadership and inter-personal skills to establish effective teams and achieve high levels of performance through people as required by a practising or potential site supervisor.

CITB pay grants for the achievement of approved short courses, which last from 3 hours to 29 days and are focused on the core construction skills needed across the industry. 

Who can benefit from the Achieving Performance Through People Training?

Supervisors and managers can be site based or office based, as long as they are managing a team or could do so in the future. Although, the training has been designed to support managers and supervisors’ development, any employee who could benefit from the training can take part.

Who should do this course

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups: supervision, management and leadership:
• how personal leadership style affects the performance of others
• establishing and maintaining an effective team

Assessment

How someone is measured

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course assessment that measures all learning outcomes and meets the pass criteria for each.

The method of formal assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard is by a paper of 20 questions based on one question per assessment criteria point within the learning outcomes with a bank of 2 sets of question papers. Delegates must achieve 75% correct answers to pass. For the avoidance of doubt there must be model answers for consistency.

Explain how to establish and maintain an effective team

    • describe the practices associated with developing and maintaining an effective team to explain two or more benefits of developing and maintaining an effective team
    • describe the stages of an established model of team formation
    • describe two or more appropriate actions to enhance the effectiveness of own team

Explain how to motivate the team to improve productivity

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

    • describe a recognised theory of motivation
    • explain how a motivational technique can be used to improve performance of own site

Explain the importance of communication to team and site performance

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

    • describe the stages in the communication cycle
    • describe two possible barriers to communication on site within a detailed and appropriate context
    • explain why it is important to overcome barriers to communication on site
    • describe two or more actions to improve the effectiveness of own communication skills on site in order to improve team and site performance

Explain the importance of feedback to individual and team performance

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

    • describe how to give effective feedback
    • explain two different types of feedback, and how each can be used to improve both individual and team performance

Explain how to apply a recognised coaching technique to develop and improve the performance of team members

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

    • explain how to manage a coaching process by agreeing goals and following a simple coaching model
    • describe a tool or technique that can be used to support effective coaching
    • identify two barriers to effective coaching within a detailed and appropriate context
    • explain two or more suitable strategies to overcome these barriers

Explain how to persuade and influence others to achieve objectives

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

    • explain the practices of persuading and influencing to explain the differences between them
    • describe the skills required in order to persuade effectively
    • explain a relevant technique for influencing others and how it is used to achieve objectives

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is the industry training board for the UK construction industry. It’s their job to help the construction industry attract talent and to support skills development, to build a better Britain.
