Nebosh General

Studied for me Nebosh General in Feb 26 with Alan Starr. Very pleased with all the support from both Alan and Matt, very happy to have passed. I feel without the support this enabled me to get my Nebosh. The course was full of examples and scenarios, which gave a better insight of expectations and real life situations. Thanks so much Academe, I will be enrolling a few members of my management team to complete IOSH in the near future.

NEBOSH or IOSH – Which is Right for You?

NEBOSH or IOSH – Which is Right for You?

If you work in construction, utilities, manufacturing or a similarly hands-on industry and you’ve decided it’s time to get a recognised health and safety qualification, the next question tends to stop people in their tracks. NEBOSH or IOSH? Both names carry real weight on site, both appear regularly in job adverts and both are offered by our team here at Acadame. So how do you know which one to go for?

The short answer is that they serve different purposes, and choosing the wrong one can mean investing time and money into something that doesn’t quite fit where you are or where you want to go.

IOSH qualifications are designed to be accessible and immediately applicable. IOSH Working Safely is aimed at anyone who needs a solid grounding in health and safety principles, whatever their role. IOSH Managing Safely is the one that tends to resonate most with supervisors and site managers who are responsible for the people working around them every day.

It covers risk assessment, hazard identification and legal responsibilities in a way that translates directly to the kind of decisions being made on site. It’s focused, relatively short and recognised by employers across the construction sector.

NEBOSH sits at a higher level and carries considerably more weight when it comes to career progression. The NEBOSH National General Certificate is widely regarded as the benchmark for anyone looking to move into a dedicated health and safety role, whether that’s as a site safety advisor, HSE manager or compliance lead within a larger contractor or principal contractor organisation. It involves more study than IOSH, includes written assessments and a practical component, and provides the kind of depth that employers expect when they’re hiring someone to own the safety function on a project or across a business.

If you’re a supervisor or manager who needs credible, practical safety knowledge to do your current job better and keep your team safer, IOSH Managing Safely is a strong and efficient choice. If your ambition is to step into a health and safety career, take on a safety-focused role within a larger organisation or work towards chartered status, NEBOSH gives you the foundation to do that properly.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive either. Plenty of people working in construction complete an IOSH qualification first and then move on to NEBOSH as their responsibilities grow and their career develops.

At Acadame we deliver both IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications at training centres in Stoke, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, with online and onsite options also available across the UK. If you’re not sure which direction makes sense for your situation, our team is happy to talk it through. Get in touch to find out more on 00330 1242165 or email hello@acadame.co.uk
