Most employers know they need to have first aid provision in place. Fewer are confident about what that actually means in practice, and the gap between ticking a compliance box and having a genuinely prepared workforce is wider than many people realise. If this is you, the team at Acadame is here to help.
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to ensure adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and personnel are available. What counts as adequate depends on the nature of the workplace, the number of employees and the level of risk involved. A busy construction site has very different requirements to a small office, and a one-size approach rarely serves either well.
There are three main first aid qualifications to be aware of.
The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course is suited to lower-risk environments and smaller workplaces where the risk profile doesn’t demand a fully trained first aider on every shift. It covers the essentials like CPR, managing an unconscious casualty and dealing with common injuries.
The three-day First Aid at Work qualification goes considerably further. It’s the appropriate choice for higher-risk workplaces and covers a much broader range of scenarios including managing fractures, burns, eye injuries and medical conditions. Those who complete it are certified as workplace first aiders for three years, after which a two-day refresher is required to maintain that certification.
For lone workers or those operating in remote locations, specific lone working first aid training addresses the particular challenges of responding to an incident without immediate backup.
A certificate confirms that someone attended a course. What matters on the day of an incident is whether that person can actually act under pressure. Good first aid training builds genuine confidence through hands-on practice, realistic scenarios and time spent on the skills that tend to fall apart when the adrenaline kicks in.
Our team here at Acadame delivers First Aid at Work training across all three levels. If you want your team to be ready rather than just compliant, speak to the team today about the right course for your workplace. Call 00330 1242165 or email hello@acadame.co.uk
