NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety

A Level 3 NEBOSH qualification for people with workplace fire safety responsibilities. It covers fire science, fire hazards and controls, fire protection systems, evacuation planning, fire risk assessment and fire safety law, and it is assessed by an open book scenario examination with a closing interview, plus a practical fire risk assessment in a real workplace.

Scope and purpose. A fire warden course is short awareness level training on what to do when the alarm sounds: evacuation, sweeping an area, extinguisher use. This is a Level 3 qualification for somebody taking formal responsibility for fire safety management, including writing the fire risk assessment the whole arrangement is built on.

People search for that title, but the current qualification is the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety, which replaced the older fire and risk management certificate. If somebody has asked you for the older title, this is almost certainly the qualification they mean. Send us the exact wording and we will confirm it before you book.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for any non domestic premises in England and Wales, typically the employer, building owner or occupier. Where there are five or more employees the significant findings must be recorded. Scotland has equivalent duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.

Yes, for FSC2. The practical fire risk assessment has to be carried out in a real building. If your own premises are awkward for it, say so at the enquiry stage and we will work it out with you.

You resit that unit only. FSC1 is £165 plus VAT and FSC2 is £125 plus VAT. Course dates include registration for both assessments, so that is the only extra cost.

It is written for low to medium risk workplaces. If you are responsible for high risk premises, complex buildings, sleeping accommodation or specialist processes, talk to us before booking. The knowledge still applies but the assessment competence expected of you is higher and there may be a better route.

No. Fire risk assessments have to be kept under review though, and fire safety law and guidance move, so continuing professional development matters if the qualification is to stay genuinely useful.

Most candidates use it to move into or strengthen fire safety, facilities, compliance or property roles. For a broader health and safety career the NEBOSH National General Certificate or the National Diploma are the usual next steps. To specialise further, Institute of Fire Safety Managers membership is a common route.
