Might come across it

Asbestos Awareness. The overwhelming majority of trades sit here: recognise asbestos containing materials, do not disturb them, and know what to do if you find something suspect.

Working in the ground

Asbestos Awareness for Groundworkers. Asbestos in soil, made ground and buried demolition waste, which no building survey covers and no asbestos register lists.

Carrying out controlled work

Non Licensed Operative. For people who actually work on asbestos containing materials under controlled conditions, including notifiable non licensed work.

Responsible for a building

Duty to Manage. Regulation 4 sits on whoever maintains or repairs non domestic premises, and a great many people are carrying it without knowing.

The one that catches people

Awareness training is a stop sign, not a permit

The commonest and most dangerous misunderstanding in this subject is that asbestos awareness qualifies somebody to work on asbestos. It does the opposite. It exists so that people recognise asbestos containing materials and stop work before they disturb them.

Anybody actually carrying out work on asbestos containing materials, even the low risk controlled sort, needs the Non Licensed Operative course. And a large category of work, including most sprayed coatings, lagging and asbestos insulating board, can only be done by a contractor licensed by the HSE. No training course substitutes for that licence.

  • Awareness: recognise it and stop. Half a day, annually

Asbestos training, answered

Match it to the work. If people might come across asbestos while doing something else, that is Asbestos Awareness. If they work in soil and made ground, that is the groundworkers course. If they carry out controlled work on asbestos containing materials, that is Non Licensed Operative. If you are responsible for a non domestic building, that is Duty to Manage. Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires employers to ensure anybody liable to be exposed to asbestos, and anybody supervising that work, receives suitable information, instruction and training. No specific course is named, but UKATA training is the recognised way employers meet and evidence that duty.

Twelve months. Asbestos is one of the few subjects where annual refresher training is genuinely expected, and most principal contractors check the date at induction.

Any building constructed or refurbished before the year 2000 should be treated as containing asbestos until a survey says otherwise. That is a very large share of the UK building stock.

No. Awareness training exists so people recognise asbestos and stop. Controlled work on asbestos containing materials needs the Non Licensed Operative course; licensed work needs an HSE licensed contractor.

A middle category created by CAR 2012. Still non licensed, but it has to be notified to the enforcing authority, records kept, and medical surveillance arranged. A good many employers doing it do not realise they are, and it is covered on the Non Licensed Operative course.

Yes. Awareness, groundworkers and duty to manage all work well live online, and the UKATA certificate is the same. For Non Licensed Operative we would normally recommend classroom or onsite because of the practical content.
